Elisa Storke loses fight with cancer

Staff Reports

Elisa Storke greets a friend at Friday's dodgeball tournament at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.

Elisa Storke lost her battle with cancer on Thursday, according to the Facebook Page Elisa's Angels.

Storke, 34, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma in November 2013.

She was undergoing treatment at Renown Regional Medical Center when she died from complications.

In a June 5 Facebook post Elisa said the tumors in her brain had been stabilized, however, other tumors in her body had grown a little, specifically in her liver. Doctors planned to radiate a portion of her spine to shrink the tumor that was causing excruciating pain down her left arm, then start a new immunotherapy.

"There are so many peaks and valleys when battling cancer, but I'm still feeling hopeful," Elisa said.

Friends are asking that people respect the familiy's privacy, saying that news of a memorial will be shared at a later date.

She was a doctoral student at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she taught full time in the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages program before she had to stop due to her illness.

Since news of her death, friends have flooded the Elisa's Angels Facebook page.

"Elisa, I hope to one day be even half the great teacher that you were," Kelley Diesfeld posted. "You have inspired so many people, myself included. You did all the good that you needed to on earth because of your beautiful soul. I will miss you."

Supporting the Storkes has been a major cause in Carson Valley over the past seven months, including a dodgeball game between firefighters and sheriff's officers in February.
