Douglas High interns learn the berry business

Six Douglas High agriculture students have been working at the Jacobs Family Berry Farm in Gardnerville learning the business.

They started in early September when harvest was well underway picking raspberries and blackberries at the farm. The students learned several skills, including insect inspection, berry selection and picking, and marketing techniques.

From September through mid-October they returned nine times learning about the 15 different varieties of berries on the farm, measuring how many pints each plant produced and how the change in weather affects their growth.

The berry plants will soon complete their fruiting and will need to be pruned for next year, something the interns look forward to learning.

“We are really thankful to the interns for helping us in our first year of harvest,” said farm owners Jack and Diana Jacobs. “Teaching these high school students is very rewarding because of their enthusiasm for agriculture and the environment. They had many constructive ideas and feedback to make our farm more successful. We hope we excited their interest in how small farms in the Carson Valley can be a rewarding business.”

The Jacobs Family Berry Farm, located on the historic Lampe ranch, provides on-site purchase of berries.
