Being Miss Douglas County a great experience

by Jessika Wass

March 17 was no ordinary day for me. It was a moment of impact. This impact has shifted the direction of my life. It has opened doors of opportunity in which I have been able to give and grow, share and succeed, and touch people’s lives in ways I never imagined possible. I learned that when you put your mind to it, anything is attainable. On March 17, I was crowned the 2012 Miss Douglas County.

The past five months have been exceptional. In April, I had the honor of awarding the athletes of the Special Olympic Basketball Tournament in Reno. I’ve made appearances at local events such as the Carson Valley Little League Opening Ceremony, Pop-Warner Football Sign Ups, the Fishing Derby, and the 3rd Annual Walk For Feat.

I spoke at several D.A.R.E. Graduations, the Carson City Traffic School, and the Soroptimist International of Carson Valley. In July I traveled to Mesquite for the annual Miss Nevada Pageant. This was a very exciting time and I came home with the non-finalist Interview Award. The most rewarding moment I’ve had so far has been through my platform, Jump In! A Leap Toward A Healthier Generation of Kids.

This summer I have worked with a variety of age groups at the Boys and Girls Club where I am able to teach the kids about nutrition and the benefits of eating healthy while implementing physical activity in a fun and productive way.

As Miss Douglas County I have been able to reach out to many people in our community, spread the word about the importance of fighting childhood obesity, and compete in a preliminary state pageant for the Miss America Organization, but none of this would be possible without the support of my sponsors. I would like to give a huge thank you to the following people and businesses that have supported me throughout my journey:

Serendipity Skin Care
