Avalanche training comes to Minden

Staff Reports

Chances that someone will get caught in an avalanche are pretty slim at the first day of a snowmobile avalanche safety clinic scheduled at Minden-Tahoe Airport 6:30-8:30 p.m. March 28.

The second day, however, will see some runners in the snow, as the Bridgeport Ranger District's two-day free clinic moves to the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area.

Eight snowmobilers will have the opportunity to ride with Truckee, Calif., professional Duncan Lee of LetsRideAdventures.

"Snowmobilers' access to steep, rugged, and high-elevation terrain often places them in areas exposed to high-avalanche risk; fortunately, there are ways to stay safe and have fun," organizers said. "Anyone who rides off of groomed trails should attend — even one small piece of information gleaned from this class can make a difference in having a really good powder day or a really bad day if you accidentally trigger an avalanche."

The clinic in Minden will be at the Sierra Front Interagency Fire Dispatch Center, 2311 Firebrand Circle. Friday's attendees are eligible for the March 29 on-the snow-practice clinic.
