Assistant Secretary of Education visiting Western Nevada College

The Assistant U.S. Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education will visit Western Nevada College on Tuesday to learn about the college’s adult literacy and language program and to support adult learning opportunities in our community.Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier’s visit coincides with National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week, Sept. 10-16. It is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour, which will bring U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to Reno for a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, where he and community leaders will focus on the cost of and access to higher education.Dann-Messier will tour WNC’s Adult Literacy and Learning program that has implemented innovative techniques to teach English language and literacy skills to Western Nevada residents. Her visit will focus on the college’s GED BootCamp program and its English as a Second Language Transitions course. She will hear from individual students who have benefitted from the educational opportunities, and will meet with WNC President Carol Lucey as well as instructors from the ALL program.“We are excited to have Dr. Dann-Messier visit WNC’s acclaimed Adult Literacy and Language Program,” said Brad Deeds, state GED administrator for the Nevada Department of Education. “Teri Zutter and her staff have developed a highly successful and internationally-recognized GED Boot Camp program which has helped hundreds of adults in the Carson City area get their GED and transition on to community college or training courses. We feel that adult education is one key to turning around the economy and getting Nevadans back to work.”
