All-day kindergarten at three schools
August 14, 2012
Summer is coming to an end and it’s that time of year when the school house bell rings, luring children into its halls. School registration in Douglas County is now available as well as all-day kindergarten options for the 2012-2013 school year.
A federal grant of $3 million from Striving Reader Comprehensive Literacy was awarded to Jacks Valley Elementary, Meneley and Scarselli making all-day kindergarten available to students.
Pinon Hills Elementary school has full enrollment of students in its kindergarten program for the coming school year.
As for the other Douglas County schools, Zephyr Cove Elementary, Gardnerville Elementary, and Minden Elementary, all day kindergarten is provided for a tuition based fee of $75 per week if there is an enrollment of 20 students or more prior to the start of school on Monday.
Douglas County School District Superintendent Lisa Noonan said the value of all-day kindergarten is that it allows students additional time and a head start on literacy and mathematics requirements so they are more prepared for the first grade. Additional class time exhibits increased learning abilities and more independent and classroom involvement.
Registration at all schools requires an original birth certificate, complete and up-to-date immunization records signed by a doctor or nurse and proof of residency. Immunizations are available at Carson City Community Health Department and Douglas County Health Clinic.
