First campaign filing deadline today

The first chapter in the 2014 election season closes with the end of filing in Nevada’s judicial races at 5 p.m. today.

Both Douglas County’s district court judges filed to retain their seats on the first day of filing on Jan. 6.

Michael Gibbons and Tod Young are seeking re-election to office. Young was appointed to his seat by Gov. Brian Sandoval, after District Judge Dave Gamble retired. Gibbons is seeking his fourth term on the bench.

There are also two Nevada Supreme Court Justices signed up for the 2014 election, including Gibbons’ brother Mark, and Kris Pickering.

Campaign contribution and expense reports were due Wednesday and one of the first races of the campaign is already begun on the financial side.

Republican Gardnerville resident Robin Reedy reported raising $19,804 to challenge Assembly 39 incumbent Jim Wheeler. Reedy loaned her campaign $10,000, and received $2,000 from NMTA Activities in Reno. Her largest single donor in Douglas County was Gardnerville’s Donna Baushke with $500. She reported $954.84 in mostly in-kind expenses.

Wheeler reported raising $9,989, and spending $21,023 during 2013.

His largest campaign contributor was hotel giant Las Vegas Sands Corp. with $2,500. He also received a $1,350 donation from the Lyon County Republican Central Committee. His largest Douglas County contributor is Jobs Peak resident Thomas Starrett, with $1,000.

Wheeler received $2,889 in contributions of $100 or less.

Filing for the 2014 nonjudicial candidates starts March 3.

Douglas County Republicans and Democrats will be holding precinct meetings to select delegates to the county convention and work on platforms over the next few weeks.

Republicans are gathering 7 p.m. Jan. 29 across the county. Go to http://www.douglasgop.org/p/voters.html to find out where each precinct is meeting.

Democrats are holding their caucus at Douglas High School on Feb. 22.
