Workshop teaches suicide intervention skills

After attending an applied suicide intervention skills training workshop five years ago, Debbie Posnien felt better prepared to handle the job ahead of her.

The executive director for Douglas County’s Suicide Prevention Network recommends the training for anyone who works with the public, in the medical field, law enforcement or school district.

“I felt very assured that if someone ever came to me and told me they were thinking about suicide, I would have the tools to guide them to receiving help,” Posnien said. “It’s a wonderful training that will help you feel more comfortable talking to someone who is thinking about ending their life.”

The two-day workshop is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Nov. 15-16 at the Carson Valley Inn. Registration is at 7:30 a.m., and lunch and refreshment are provided.

“It’s an intervention skills training that teaches what suicide is all about, what happens when a person is thinking about suicide, and how to talk to someone, and help them get the help that’s needed,” Posnien said.

Misty Allen and Janett Massolo from the state’s office of suicide prevention are the trainers.

Allen is the suicide prevention coordinator for the state. She has more than 10 years of experience in suicide prevention, intervention and follow up.

Massolo is the youth suicide prevention program assistant who has more than 15 years of experience in crisis intervention and suicide intervention, prevention and follow up efforts for the suicide prevention hotline.

Trainers recommend dressing comfortably, as the workshop is interactive, and although all training materials are provided, participants may want to bring something to take notes with.

Continuing education credits are available upon completion of both days. No credit is given for partial attendance.

Cost for the workshop is $75. Space is available for 30 participants.
