Float spa deprives senses, not customers

Peace of Mind Spa is a sensory deprivation destination that allows its customers to experience deep relaxation. The flotation tank itself is a sensory deprivation pod with 10-inch deep water warmed to 93.5 degrees and enriched with 800 pounds of Epsom salt. The space inside is approximately 8-feet-long by 4-feet-wide.

“It’s like floating in the Dead Sea,” said Darin Nobriga, owner of Peace of Mind Spa.

As stated on the Peace of Mind website, flotation has both physical and psychological benefits. It increases endorphins which are the body’s natural painkillers allowing for a natural reliever of depression, stress, and mental and physical frustrations. The flotation tank also minimizes light, sound and gravity; due to the reduced sensory input, the mind can wander to a peaceful, undisturbed state.

“You are basically going into nothingness and it’s like going into space. When that happens, you lose your consciousness of the outside world and are able to relax,” said Nobriga.

According to Nobriga the idea of flotation was discovered in the 1950s and is most popular in Europe; however, the largest sensory deprivation in the U.S. is located in Oregon. Peace of Mind Float Spa is the only sensory deprivation in Northern Nevada, he said.

Nobriga said he had done research on the topic of sensory deprivation and was inspired by what he had learned, thus creating his own business and bringing it to an area which had not been introduced to it before. Peace of Mind has been open for two years, originally in South Tahoe, but relocated to Douglas County two months ago, he said. He relocated because most of his customers at the Tahoe location were from Reno and the Carson City area and wanted to bring his business closer to them while in the comfort of his own home.

“It’s basically the same operation as in Tahoe, just out of my home,” Nobriga said. “The settings are the same, but it’s bigger here, and more comfortable because it’s quieter.”

Aside from the flotation tanks, Peace of Mind Spa also provides a far infrared sauna and an aroma therapy oxygen bar. The sauna has special heaters installed into the wood that generates infrared rays to deeply penetrate the skin and stimulate the whole body. Some benefits of the sauna may include relief from muscle pain and aches, chronic fatigue, depression, heavy metal poisoning, and weight loss.

The aroma therapy oxygen bar provides an added benefit before or after a float to allow for ultimate relaxation. There are four aromas to choose from: eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, and lemon grass.

“People are blown away by the experience,” Nobriga said. He enjoys seeing people’s reactions after they float; to see how relaxed they are and hearing what they have to share from their experiences.

Nobriga recommends that first time customers float for an hour to receive the full experience and to truly understand what is happening.

“It’s going to be unusual,” he said. “So you have to adapt the first time to get an understanding of the process.”

Peace of Mind Float Spa is located at 860 Valley Vista Drive 89705, behind Target in Northern Douglas. They are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Monday. For more information call 775-292-0096 or visit Peace of Mind Float Spa’s website at

“Come in to see us at Peace of Mind Float Spa, let us relax your mind and body,” Nobriga said. “If you try it once, I guarantee you’ll be hooked on it.”
