During its grand opening in April, Pioneer Yarn Company owner Jennifer Huntley asked customers to help make 100 hats by Sept. 1 to be donated to people in need.
Community members went above and beyond, knitting and crocheting 185 hats.
“We were surprised and very happy at the number of hats, and overwhelmed by how much personality was put into each one,” Huntley said. “Carson Valley is amazingly generous .It’s important for all of us to give back to the community.”
On Friday, the hats were given to Family Support Council, Carson Valley Senior Living and Project Santa Claus.
Family Support Council is giving away their hats during their annual coat drive in November.
“It really helps with children and adults who don’t have warm attire for winter. It’s great we have a collaboration with another partner in the community, said Shirley Gibson, executive director. “Back to basics is working for us especially with community involvement. It’s nice to have open arms and open doors to have the community support for Family Support Council.”
Gibson also said the council is in need of volunteers for the holidays.

As Carson Valley Senior Living Activity Director Carol Wilson looked through the selection of hats, she expressed her appreciation.
“This is awesome,” she added. “So many of them will go for our Alzheimer’s wing.”
