The RC Morning Report for July 3

A flash flood watch goes into effect at noon for the Sierra Front. Heavy rains from Tuesday’s thunderstorms caused a mudslide that closed both directions of Interstate 80 on Tuesday. The National Weather Service is predicting that could happen again thanks to very hot temperatures, slow-moving storms and unusually moist air for early July will produce areas of heavy rainfall. Quarter-inch hail was reported on Tuesday afternoon northwest of Markleeville and southeast of Gardnerville.

I count about seven reports of small fires in the Pine Nuts. The Siegel fire on the side of Mount Siegel was contained and controlled at a third of an acre. The Sunrise fire on Hot Springs Mountain was limited to a half acre. The rest tended to be single tree fires. Rain from the storms helped keep the fires small, the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch.

Minden Town Board members will hear a request from Edgewood Companies for a tentative map dividing an 89.64-acre parcel into 17 parcels with the smallest being five acres. The land is zoned rural residential, which permits the five-acre parcels, so no master plan amendment is required. The property is located south of Buckeye Road and east of Sixth Street. Minden meets at 5:30 p.m. in the CVIC Hall. The Edgewood item goes at 6:30 p.m.

If you’ve business with The Record-Courier, it’s best to conduct it today, as we’ll be closed in observance of Independence Day on Thursday. We’ll be back bright and early on Friday morning.

With an 80 percent chance of precipitation, we’re looking at a certainty we’ll get thunderstorms today. Expect the clouds to start building over the Sierra crest around noon. The high temperature is only supposed to hit 96, well below the record of 102. We’ll see how the day develops.
