County ends fiscal year with taxable sales up, slightly

Despite decreases in four of Douglas County’s largest categories, its merchants brought in 6.6 percent more in taxable sales during June compared with the same month in 2013.

That put the county ahead by 1.1 percent for the fiscal year, with its merchants reporting $599 million in sales, according to figures released by the Nevada Department of Taxation.

The county’s largest category, food services and drinking places, was down 4 percent to $11.6 million compared to last year. The total year showed the county down 2.5 percent to $131.7 million.

Two Walmarts and a Target contribute toward making general merchandise stores the second largest category in the county with $7.9 million in taxable sales. While down 4.7 percent from the same month in 2013, the category ended the year up 5.2 percent.

Douglas County’s building industry and summer gardening contributed to a 13-percent increase in the third largest category, building materials and garden equipment and supplies. Those stores brought in $5.8 million in June and $55.3 million for the year, an 8.7 percent increase.

Motor vehicle and parts dealers did well in June with a 53.6 percent increase over June 2013. Despite only having one car dealer, the county raised $3.7 million in taxable sales, up from $2.4 million for the same month last year. Merchants in the category brought in $26.5 million over the fiscal year, up 2.4 percent.

The county’s manufacturers of durable goods ended the year on a positive note with $3.1 million, up 13.9 percent from June 2013. The category ended the year down 7.8 percent

Rounding out the top six categories, food and beverage stores were down slightly with $2.69 million in sales during the month and $32.8 million for the year. The category was down 7.3 percent for the fiscal year.
