Artists take to the high country in Plein Air event

Markleeville is welcoming a group of well-known Sierra artists for a Plein Air event which started Tuesday.

Today, Thursday and Friday artists will continue to paint from various viewpoints in the county.

The artists will be busy on Friday night, framing each painting for hanging in the Markleeville Art & Soul Gallery . This year there will be a qualified outside judge of the paintings, with monetary prizes.

Downtown Markleeville will be center stage on Saturday. Each artist has agreed to paint in a competition with a two-hour time limit, called a “quick draw.” At 9 a.m., the artists will begin a painting and at 11 a.m., all artists will surrender their art to the judge.

The public is invited to observe the artists and have refreshments at the gallery where local musician, Russel Ketenjian will provide music.

Attendees vote on their favorite quick draw painting: the winner will be awarded a cash prize later that same afternoon.

While the artists are focusing on their quick draw painting, the judge will be in the gallery to judge the paintings completed over the past four days.

The artists will have a barbecue lunch at the Markleeville Toll Station.

At 1 p.m. the judge will award prizes at the reception hosted by Markleeville Art & Soul.

Even though many paintings are sold immediately, all paintings will remain hung that day.

The artists are award-winning, hard working, and talented. To see their credentials and awards, visit
