Saying farewell to a top Tiger

On Friday, Douglas High School said farewell to the Class of 2014. On Monday, friends and family will say farewell to Douglas County High School all-conference outstanding football player Charles Leonard Barrett, 85, a member of the Class of 1948.

Born in Reno, the native Nevadan spent many of his formative years in Markleeville, Calif., before going to Douglas High.

During his tenure at the Gardnerville school, Mr. Barrett served as class president and lettered all four years with the Tiger football team.

His marriage to Gardnerville native Marian Sarasola, his high school sweetheart on July 10, 1949, made the front page in The Record-Courier.

She was a supervising operator at the United Farmers Telephone & Telegraph, and he worked at the Minden Creamery.

Mr. Barrett joined the U.S. Marines when the Korean War broke out, and served in country during the conflict.

Upon his return to Carson Valley, he worked for the Nevada Department of Transportation for 30 years until he retired. Then he spent 10 years as a substitute bus driver for the Douglas County School District.

He served as an assistant fire chief for the Gardnerville Fire Department for 25 years, and served as a member of the Gardnerville Town Water Board and the Douglas County Recreation Board.

Daughter Cathy Colquhoun said he was instrumental in the purchase and development of Lampe Park and building the first Douglas County Swimming Pool while he was on the recreation board.

A memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Gall Catholic Church, 1343 Centerville Lane, in Gardnerville.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years; three children Paul (Vicki) Barrett, Cathy (Gerry) Colquhoun and Bob (Jolly) Barrett.
