The updated Douglas County Economic Vitality Plan was approved Thursday at the county commissioners’ meeting. The updated plan includes eight projects and three focus areas, a change from the original plan adopted in 2010 which included 12 projects. Members of the Economic Vitality team, consisting of public, private and nonprofit organizations presented an updated version of the plan at the meeting.
The team highlighted areas of success and new businesses since 2010 such as the transformation of the Town of Genoa into a destination through enhancements on Main Street and the completion of the Genoa Vista Trail, which resulted in five additional businesses. Progress was also reported on the Community and Senior Center which will open in spring of 2015, and at the Minden-Tahoe Airport where four new businesses have located.
“In 2009 in the midst of the recession, the county wanted to do more to benefit existing business and the community,” said Commission Chairman Doug Johnson. “A little more than three years into implementation, we are starting to see some diversification of the economy, revitalization of downtowns, progress at the Minden-Tahoe Airport and capital investments from the private sector.”
The updated plan continues the vision of creating a ‘Community to Match the Scenery’ modifying the goal to be recognized by 2022 as one of the best communities to live, work, learn and play. The team will continue its work on three focus areas; creating distinctive downtowns, capitalizing on recreation and lifestyle, and developing a thriving climate for business and learning.
The 12 original projects were simplified to eight with two marked and celebrated as complete. Executing the next ripe projects was established as a priority. Project implementation will continue to be led by champions, private or nonprofit industry leaders who have a passion for community and their individual projects. The eight priority projects are the South Shore vision implementation, Valley vision implementation, K-12 education innovation, accelerating advanced manufacturing, open for business, transportation attractions, sports aviation destination, and tremendous trails.
