We’ve all struggled for the past few years. Many have lost jobs; lost homes. Too many have lost hope. After all, what can one person do?
Funny you should ask, because one woman has not lost hope and she’s showing us all how we can help.
I met Jennifer Cantley-Saba at the Kaia Revolution BRIK awards. She was cheered as she received an award for starting her own revolution – Small Northern Nevada LLC , soon to be Shop Small Nevada. This young resident of Gardnerville has been encouraging everyone to start shopping locally and putting our money to work closer to home. And she’s not stopping with Nevada: she’s working on launching Shop Small America, to help people find Shop Small locations all over the country. Shop Small organizes online shopping as well as locally organized festivals.
So what can you do? The next Shop Small festival is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 15 in the Sharkey’s parking lot. Sign up for a booth ($35) or check out the great businesses that are joining the movement.
Next time you need anything, check out their site before you drive to Reno. I sent a beautiful basket of organic coffee to my husband’s parents from Alpen Sierra Coffee. This weekend I’m going to check out the Loop in Gardnerville, which I love but haven’t been in a while. While I’m there, I’ll check out some of the other great shops in the area. I love the idea that my money is going into a local family instead of a big box store owned by a corporation and staffed by underpaid hourly workers.
Contact Shop Small Nevada at their Minden Office at 1674 Highway 395 Suit No. 200 or the Carson City Office at 2578 S. Curry Street No. 6. They are working on a Reno office, as well. Or email them at Shopsmallnn@gmail.com or call 775-220-6991
Or check them out at http://www.shopsmallnn.com where they feature a new business, artist and charity each month. Like them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/smallbusinessesofnorthernnevada.
One of my favorite Facebook shares from her site is “When you buy from a mom or pop business you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table, a family pay a mortgage or a student pay for college.”
There’s change in the air. Do you feel it? Why not be part of it? Spread the word, do your part to grow our towns. Shop Small. Shop Local.
