East Fork crews help suppress on Pedlar fire

East Fork firefighters helped to suppress a 96-acre fire in American Canyon that started Sunday afternoon.

A brush truck, an engine and a chief responded to the fire from the East Fork Fire District.

Spokeswoman Lisa Ross said the fire was contained by 4 p.m. Monday, despite obstacles including the weather and the terrain.

“Firefighters made great progress the last two days mopping-up and containing the Pedlar Fire,” Ross said. “Steep, rocky terrain and 100 degree plus temperatures have been challenging on this incident. Fire crews will continue throughout the day mopping-up any potential hot spots and patrolling the fire.”

Two firefighters received heat-related injuries while fighting the fire during the hottest portion of the day. No structures were lost.

Smoke from fires combined with a high pressure ridge over the Western United States is casting a pall over most of the country.

Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid health problems related to the smoky conditions caused by the fire.

Precautions include:

Limiting outdoor activities and remain in an air-conditioned environment if possible

If you do not have an air conditioner and if smoke is likely to get inside your house, leave the area until the smoke is completely gone;

Avoid activities that put extra demand on your lungs and heart; contact your medical provider if you are concerned or your health gets worse.

Smoke may worsen symptoms for people who have heart of lung disease, of other pre-existing respiratory conditions such as respiratory allergies, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

When smoke levels are high enough, even healthy people may experience some of these symptoms.
