Walker, Coleville on intruder alert

A Walker homeowner found two intruders wearing dark clothing, who had entered the house through an unlocked door just before lunchtime on March 19.

According to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner chased the intruders away, who appeared unaware that anyone was in the house.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, which occurred at 11:30 a.m. The homeowners said someone knocked on the front door earlier asking for someone who didn’t live there. Authorities believe that the man may have been checking to see if anyone was home.

Residents of Walker and Coleville are being asked to keep their homes locked and to contact the sheriff’s office if they see any suspicious activity. Patrols in the community have been increased.

“If you believe suspicious activity is taking place, please do not take matters into your own hands,” Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Jennifer Hansen said. “Please call the Mono County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at (760) 932-7549 ext. 7, and we will have a deputy respond and assist you.”

■ Douglas County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 49-year-old South Lake Tahoe man on suspicion of drunken driving on March 23 after he nearly struck a patrol vehicle on Kingsbury Grade, according to a deputy’s report.

The deputy was driving west on Kingsbury near Deer Run Court when the man, driving east in a Jeep Cherokee, swerved to avoid a turning car and nearly hit the deputy head-on, according to the report.

The deputy reported slamming on the patrol vehicle’s brakes and pulled over the shoulder to avoid the Jeep. The deputy made a U-turn and stopped the vehicle near Jupiter Drive. The driver was arrested and booked into Douglas County’s Stateline jail. A preliminary breath test showed his blood alcohol content was 0.169 percent, more than twice the legal limit, according to the report.
