Douglas alumni create event-planning business

The After Party owners, Christy and Justin McDougal, at their wedding last summer.

Setting up an event like a wedding and tearing it all back down again is not what most couples or their families want to do after the reception is over and the cake has been eaten.

So Christy and Justin McDougal, 25 and 27, started The After Party, a business that specializes in cleaning venues, packing up party keepsakes and returning rented items to vendors.

The After Party officially opened June 1 and has booked their first wedding of the summer.

"I've always been interested in event coordination," Christy said. "The idea came to us from our own experience at our wedding."

The McDougal's were married on New Year's Eve and had to have their reception party cleaned and vacated by 1 a.m.

"Our family was left to box everything up and clean," she said. "Things were thrown into boxes and broken. It was a mess."

After doing some research, she and Justin realized that there were no businesses in the Reno area that helped couples or other event planners with the aftermath of a party.

"It's not very glamorous, but someone has to do it," she said. "The day of the event, you need a lot of help."

Christy hopes to attract customers who were in the same position as she and her husband were during their wedding planning.

"We want to work with people who are budget conscious and need someone to do the leg work," she said.

The After Party can travel outside of Reno to plan events, she said.

And that means planning weddings in their hometown of Gardnerville if customers are available.

The McDougals both have family in Carson Valley and Christy's parents each own their own business.

"They gave me the inspiration to jump in," Christy said.

Christy is a 2007 graduate of Douglas High School and Justin graduated from DHS in 2004.

"I have a journalism degree and my husband has an engineering degree (from the University of Nevada, Reno)," she said. "He has worked in labs and I interned at a television station in Reno in college, so we're both used to hard work and deadlines."
