Man tries eluding officers in Mini Cooper

A Lancaster, Calif., man driving a 2003 Mini Cooper allegedly attempted to evade authorities near Tom’s Place this morning.

Tommy Courtney, 21, was being chased north on Highway 395 by Mono County Sheriff’s deputies at 6:42 a.m., according to information released by the California Highway Patrol.

Near Crowley Lake, Courtney turned onto South Landing Road and then across the road and tried to get back onto the highway, where he ran into a guardrail along the onramp.

During the accident investigation, a CHP drug-recognition expert determined that Courtney was under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was taken into custody for driving under the influence. Mono and Inyo Sheriff’s departments are conducting an investigation into the incident that prompted the chase.
