Former Philadelphia resident Michael Fayer, who opened the Philadelphia Restaurant and Sandwich Co. in the Gardnerville Ranchos, said the secret to his food is that there are no secrets.
“We have an open kitchen with bar seats, so we have no secrets,” he said. “People can watch their food being cooked, interact with the kitchen, get tastings, and just enjoy seeing the action in the kitchen.”
He said the restaurant, located at 1281 Kimmerling Road, Suite 10, focuses on healthy Italian American cooking from scratch.
“We have a lot to offer with items like our strawberry and goat cheese salad to our shrimp scampi to the best Philadelphia cheese steak in or outside of Philadelphia,” he said. “We do just about everything from scratch. We bring in whole rib-eye and slice it in-house. We roast whole pork and slice it for the Italian roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich. We use uncured pepperoni, we use the best capicollo ham on the market. We provide the best product we can at the best price we can afford.”
Fayer said people ask him if he’s a chef, and he replies that he’s not, he’s a cook.
“I grew up in the Philly burbs with two Italian best friends,” he said. “My father started cooking cheese steaks in a North Philly deli back in 1962 and I have since perfected it. You cannot get a better steak in Philadelphia or anywhere. I even have a special order Italian bread through Truckee Sourdough that is available only in my restaurant. I describe my concept as scratch Italian American cooking and Philadelphia themed sandwiches.”
Fayer moved to South Lake Tahoe from Philadelphia in November and opened the restaurant on May 8. He said the restaurant doesn’t charge extra for carry out items.
“I built this menu off of a value approach and I hope everyone sees the value,” he said.
The restaurant is open 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
