Barking dog alerts homeowner to fire

A barking dog alerted an Orchard Road homeowner that his garage was on fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to a home on Butterfly Lane off Scotti Lane at about 11:45 p.m., East Fork Fire Capt. Terry Taylor said.

The resident said he was awakened by the barking of his dog and found the attached garage was filled with smoke.

Taylor said firefighters from Minden, the Gardnerville Ranchos, Gardnerville, Johnson Lane, Ruhenstroth and Fish Springs responded to the blaze. Because there are no hydrants, several stations sent water tenders to provide firefighting water.

Taylor said the fire appeared to have started near a portable heater. The fire damaged the home’s well controls, and did an estimated $30,000 in damage to the contents and the building.
