Book signing brings young author to Gardnerville

Bridget Park signs copies of her memoir Tuesday at St. Gall Pastoral Center in Gardnerville.

Friends and family members braved frigid temperatures Tuesday evening to join young author Bridget Park at a book signing in Gardnerville for a memoir she wrote following the 2008 suicide of her brother Austin.

Bridget sold and signed more than 80 copies of "Growing Young: A Memoir of Grief" at the St. Gall Pastoral Center.

At the time of her brother's death, the Parks lived in Smith Valley and frequently attended church in Gardnerville.

They are descendants of the pioneer ranching Park family.

Bridget said she thought of the book signing as a homecoming of sorts as she greeted friends and relatives from Smith and Carson valleys.

Austin Park died Nov. 29, 2008 in Smith Valley, when he was 14 and Bridget just 12.

She wrote the book over two years, and said she hopes it can be used as a tool for families who are experiencing the loss of a loved one, or don't know how to comfort someone who is grieving.

Copies of the book are available at Amazon.com, and at the Suicide Prevention Network office on County Road in Minden.

Bridget said she wanted to make the book available locally, and SPN executive director Debbie Posnien offered her location.

At a recent book signing at Bishop Manogue High School, where Bridget is a senior, she signed 100 copies.

On Jan. 24 Bridget is one of 22 speakers in the University of Nevada, Reno, TEDx talks, a program of local events to bring people together to share conversation and community.
