Aspen fire smoke casts pall in Valley

Shifting wind patterns brought smoke from the 21,381-acre Aspen fire burning northwest of Fresno in the Sierra foothills back to Carson Valley on Sunday. By Monday, more smoke came into the Valley, thanks in part to backfires lit to increase the size of the fireline. Firing operations on Monday and Tuesday were being used to remove unburned fuels between the active fireline and the contingency lines which fire crews have been creating over the past several days, according to fire officials.
