New Douglas deputy sworn in

Joel Garza of Reno has joined the Douglas County Sheriff‘s Office as a new deputy.

He was sworn in Monday by Sheriff Ron Pierini in a ceremony held at the Carson Valley station in Minden.

The appointment comes after several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a written examination, physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam.

Garza will undergo a 12-week training program to provide him with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform his duties as a jail deputy, Pierini said.

Garza, 31, graduated from Robert E. Lee Senior High School in Baytown, Texas, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years before he was honorably discharged.

Garza is in the National Guard in addition to his new assignment at DCSO.
