Douglas High School has recently welcomed a new staff member on campus to assist students in crossing the street from the school to and from the Maverick parking lot.
Ron Santi is the man who has filled this new position and says he is enjoying the job, which also includes the duty of patrolling the parking lot while school is in session.
“The crosswalk is heavily traveled,” said Santi, “(My job) helps keep traffic flowing.”
The new position was filled soon after an incident in which a student was struck by a vehicle on that same crosswalk after school hours.
“I think (the school district) realized the need was there before the incident, but I can’t be sure. There are probably 200 kids that cross at lunch,” said Santi.
He has never worked for the school district until now, but has volunteered for the past 12 years.
“I go out about 5 minutes before lunch and stay out about 5 minutes after lunch,” Santi said.
Santi’s main job only takes place during the high school lunchtime; there is currently no crossing guard before or after school hours.
