Record cold freezes, breaks pipes

It wasn’t the coldest temperature this week, but Tuesday’s low of minus 7 degrees cracked a 41-year-old record set in 1972.

On Monday morning, the low temperature plunged to minus 10 degrees, not quite as cold as the record of minus 18 set in 2009.

This is the second week in a row that a new record for cold temperatures was set.

The high temperature is expected rise above freezing in Carson Valley for the first time in four days today after a stretch of morning temperatures below zero.

Chilly weather preserved snow that fell in the western portion of Carson Valley over the weekend, and froze pipes around the Valley.

Firefighters responded to a report of frozen sprinkler pipes at Carson Valley Middle School on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters also responded to several reports of residents slipping on the ice and falling down.

Water was shut off to the school in an effort to repair the leak. Officials said school will be in session today.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reported two accidents on Spooner Summit on Tuesday morning, while the California Highway Patrol reported a noninjury accident on Highway 88 near Sorensen’s.

A temperature inversion pinned hazy air in the Valley this week, preserving freezing temperatures in lower spots, while the mountains were sometimes warmer.

Air quality in Carson Valley dropped to unhealthy levels overnight on Monday.

The National Weather Service issued an air alert for Western Nevada due to stagnant air, which is expected to continue through the week.

Carson Valley residents woke up Saturday to new snow after a storm dumped 7 inches in Genoa. R-C weather watcher George Uebele reported he received 4.75 inches of snow in Sheridan Acres. Minden weather watcher Stan Kapler said 2 inches fell in the Douglas County seat.December, January and February are typically the wettest months in the water year. Last winter was the second dry one in a row.
