R-C named top newspaper in category

The Record-Courier was named the top newspaper in its class for the fourth time in eight years.

The award was announced on Saturday in Elko at the 2013 Nevada Press Association “Better Newspaper Contest.”

The R-C won the general excellence award for intermediate newspapers, which includes large weeklies and small dailies.

“Well-designed, something for every reader,” judges said. “Page heads are simple but enough. Nice flow. Looks like you have an active letters to the editor section, indicating good engagement. Effective use of photos throughout. Great classified section and good ad count. Well done.”

The R-C won first place for best online writing, which included both daily updates and the award-winning R-C running commentary.

The newspaper also won top advertising awards for both general excellence and its annual magazine, the Carson Valley Almanac. The Almanac also won second place for its editorial content.

Photographer Jim Grant won first place for best feature photo.

The R-C won second place for best overall design and for best information graphic.

Photographer Shannon Litz won second place awards for best news coverage and best portrait.

A series on juvenile probation in Douglas County written by Scott Neuffer and Sheila Gardner took third place. Gardner also received a third place for best news feature.

R-C Sports Editor Dave Price won two awards with the Lahontan Valley News. Price won second place for best sports feature and third place for best business news story.
