Two Valley arts groups receive grants

Carson Valley Arts Council and Carson Valley Community Theater in Minden received $7,930 in grants from the Nevada Arts Council.

The board of the Nevada Arts Council has approved more than 125 grants totaling more than a half million dollars to help local artists and art groups enhance communities statewide via, bluegrass, jazz, Shakespeare, hand weaving, watercolor and even fire.

“Again, grant panels reaffirmed that the Nevada arts industry is doing a remarkable job in providing our communities and schools a broad range of cultural activities. Though the NAC board is delighted to provide these grants to support the work of Nevada’s arts industry across the state, we are saddened the amounts remain significantly reduced,” said Tim Jones, outgoing board chair. “This year’s grant awards to our nonprofit organizations remain nearly 50 percent less than recommended by our panels of specialists, due to budget cuts.”

The 2014 fiscal year NAC Arts Learning Project and Partners in Excellence grants went to organizations and public institutions in 10 Nevada counties.

Grants were awarded at the spring/summer NAC board meeting June 14 at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Earlier in the month, grant review panels convened in public meetings to evaluate the grant applications and recommend funding amounts for the board to consider.

Though each category of grants serves a different purpose, they all result in increased economic opportunity and artistic growth within their communities.

Other grant recipients included Get in the Act! Arts in Action in Stateline for $3,134, and Tahoe Arts Project in South Lake for $2,815.

NAC project grants provide support for arts activities of community organizations and public institutions.

Arts learning grants support arts education projects and artist residencies by arts and community organizations, schools and public institutions.
