Mound House resident Diana Sweeney has achieved her ultimate goal of being crowned Miss Nevada.
Sweeney’s win was announced on the Miss Nevada Facebook page on Saturday.
Miss Douglas County Bailey Gumm was named 4th runner up.
Sweeney, 19, competed with 10 others for the title during the 65th annual Miss Nevada & Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen pageant Friday and Saturday at Texas Station Gambling Hall and Hotel in North Las Vegas.
Miss Northern Counties Katarina Clark was named Outstanding Teen.
Miss Carson City’s Outstanding Teen, Samantha Byassee, Miss Eagle Valley’s Outstanding Teen, Jordan Elizabeth Van Worth, and Miss Douglas County Outstanding Teen Macie Tuell also competed.
Sweeney was hesitant at first when a mom at the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center, where she studied dance, suggested she compete in the pageant. But when she looked into the organization, she liked what she learned.
“I really liked that it got you involved in community service,” she said. “And when you win, you get scholarship dollars.”
It went against the cliche of the vapid beauty queen.
“I think the Miss America organization defies that stereotype with every ounce of its being,” she said. “The four parts of the crown are service, style, scholarship and success. Unless you are well-rounded in all of these aspects, you won’t do well in that organization.”
Sweeney performs lyrical dance for her talent. Her platform is “Sexual Assault — No Means No.” It’s a subject she feels strongly about.
“At a rather young age, I made the mistake of trusting the wrong person,” she said. “It didn’t turn out well for me. I don’t want anyone to go through the things I went through without having a person to talk to about it.”
Sweeney is studying math and education at UNR with the hope of becoming a professor.
After getting the last of her affairs in order last week, including a hair touch-up at Platinum Plus Salon in Carson City, Sweeney feels confident about the competition.
“I’m really motivated,” she said. “This year just feels different. I feel like I’ve given it more.”
