It’s all hands on deck for the second annual Holy Smokers barbecue and car show in Gardnerville on May 4.
Organizers are closing down Douglas Avenue for the more than 30 classic cars expected to participate in the fundraiser for City of Refuge sponsored by the Trinity Lutheran Church men’s ministry.
Organizers Archie Walker and Bruce Darling said the show will offer an opportunity for residents to check out the cars, and eat some tri-tip for lunch.
Last year’s event raised $2,000, which allowed them to build a deck onto the cottage at the City of Refuge. Money raised this year will continue work on one of the cottages.
“We had a good turnout last year,” Darling said.
The smoked tri-tip lunch costs $12 for adults, $6 for children and $30 for a family of four. In addition to the food, members of Trinity’s youth ministry will be selling rootbeer floats to raise money.
The car show is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1490 Douglas Ave., in Gardnerville.
Visitors to the show will be asked to vote on their favorite car.
City of Refuge was founded in 1991 by Diane and District Judge Dave Gamble to provide a place for pregnant women to have their children. In addition to shelter, it provides food, access to medical care, education services, parenting training, adoption and substance abuse counseling and other services.
City of Refuge is celebrating its 20th year at its current location in the Pine Nut Mountains.
