Fulfilling a promise made to Capt. Mike Biaggini before he died of cancer, fellow officers Rick Sousa and Sgt. Will Lynch are planning the fourth 5K fun run in their friend’s honor.
“We told Mike before he died that we would name the run after him and continue it in his memory,” Lynch said.
The event is May 11, and begins at 9 a.m. — rain or shine — in the parking lot of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden.
The emphasis is on “fun,” Sousa said, with proceeds going to support the sheriff’s office Honor Guard.
“It’s not a timed race,” he said. “And the route is along some of the most beautiful scenery in Douglas County.”
The 3.1-mile course begins in the parking lot at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, down Buckeye Road to the Bently Biofuel Outpost service station and back.
Water stations are along the route. Since the Bently service station is closed, organizers plan to provide portable bathrooms at the halfway mark.
Buckeye Road is closed for the run.
“We pride ourselves on this fun run,” Sousa said. “It’s to honor police officers cross the country. We raise money to send the honor guard to the national peace officers memorial in Washington, D.C.”
Lynch said it costs about $11,000 to send the 10-member guard to Washington.
Biaggini served as a member and commander of the honor guard until his death in 2010 at age 55.
“He brought in all of us on the team while he was commander,” Sousa said. “He was a great man.”
Capt. David Aymami is the honor guard commander and Lynch serves as the ranking officer.
Sousa and Lynch joined at the same time.
“There was an opening and Rick and I put in for it,” Lynch said. “What Mike did was modernize and upgrade the unit.”
The honor guard participates in funerals and parades, and will travel to funerals for officers killed in the line of duty within a 400-mile radius of Douglas County.
“Being in the honor guard means everything to me,” Sousa said. “It’s a very serious duty we have to honor the fallen.”
Sponsors are being sought for the event. Their names will be printed on commemorative T-shirts, and they will be invited to display banners at the event.
