Gotta Dance steps up the cash

Scott Smith of Re/Max Realty Affiliates is still deciding where to put his two-foot tall disco ball trophy.

The Minden resident and his partner, Ann Peters, won first place in the Suicide Prevention Network fundraiser Gotta Dance on Friday night.

“I was shocked. I didn’t think we’d win. There was some great dancers,” Smith said. “I was lucky I got Ann. She was a great teacher.”

The couple danced the jive to the Billy Joel song, “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me.“

“I fund raise better than I dance. I was the guy in the nerd suit,” Smith said. “It was hard. We had a fun dance, and the costumes were great. There was a lot of jumping around, and twists, and moves.”

Smith said the biggest reason he decided to participate in Gotta Dance was to support the cause.

“Suicide Prevention Network doesn’t have any grants, and are based on community support alone,” he said. “This fundraiser was huge for them, and I wanted to be a part of it. It’s going to be their signature event. I want to thank the community for their support. It’s what this Valley is all about.”

Due to the success of Gotta Dance, Executive Director Debbie Posnien said she will be able to expand outreach and education with the elderly and teens.

“We did much better than we thought we’d do financially because of dancing dollars people earned beforehand and at the event,” she said. “The money will be used for the continuation of the programs that will now be enhanced.”

Close to 300 people attended the inaugural fundraiser at the Carson Valley Inn that Posnien estimates brought in close to $12,000.

“Everybody came to have a good time, and that’s what they walked away with,” Posnien said. “The community support was awesome. People were very excited to be there.”

Mary Swisher and Trevor Eddings placed second, and Jessica Jensen and Craig Peters took third.
