The 17th annual Relay for Life starts 4 p.m. today at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, and will continue through the night until 9 a.m. Sunday.
Cancer survivors are asked to check in at 3 p.m., and participate in a group photograph at 3:30 p.m., before the opening ceremony where they will walk the first lap, meeting their caregivers halfway.
A luminaria ceremony, where lit candles are placed in bags decorated by friends and family, will be at 9 p.m.
“We will then all walk the lit track in silence as we remember our own reasons for being at the relay and remember our loved ones,” said spokeswoman Dahleen Kendler. “Everyone is invited to join us in this special ceremony and visit the memory tent.”
Closing ceremonies are 7 a.m. Sunday, where the candles will be extinguished and breakfast served by St. Gall Catholic Church’s Knights of Columbus.
Entertainment will be provided by Ted Nagel and Logan Young. There will also be games, events, raffles, and silent auctions. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
