Clerk-treasurer Thran resigns

Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer Ted Thran is resigning his seat effective Sept. 1 to take a job with the Town of Minden as accountant.

Thran said Tuesday he was giving up his seat after doing both the clerk-treasurer’s job and the chief accountant’s job over the last six years.

“Doing two jobs over the last six years has finally gotten to me,” he said. “I had to give up everything I loved to do. I just want to get my life back.”

Thran, 51, is a third-generation Carson Valley resident who worked for the Douglas County treasurer’s office for nine years before he was appointed to replace longtime Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Griffin in 2008.

He is a 1981 graduate of Douglas High School and a 1986 graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno, where he received a degree in business administration, accounting.

He is a certified public accountant.

Thran said that he would miss dealing with voters, taxpayers and other members of the public.

“I’m going to miss that part,” he said.

He said the budget was never there to hire someone to handle the account’s position for the clerk-treasurer’s office.

Thran had no regrets for taking the job in the first place, saying that he learned a great deal in the office.

When asked if he would do it all again, he answered, “In a heartbeat.”

Thran is the only person seeking the office of clerk-treasurer on the November ballot, so he will have to resign again if he gets a single vote, according to District Attorney Mark Jackson.

County commissioners will have to select a clerk-treasurer for the interim, and then again in January to serve two years until the 2016 election. Whomever is appointed by county commissioners would then have to stand for election a second time to complete the four-year term.

The last public official to resign just before an election was Public Administrator Lynn EnEarl in 2012. She filed a second resignation after she won the election.
