NV150 Fair opens today

Fuji Park was bustling with activity Tuesday as vendors and organizers set up for the NV150 Fair, which opens today and runs through Sunday.

“Everybody’s really excited,” said fair manager Susan Taylor. “Everyone who is here really wants the fair to succeed, so it’s a super positive atmosphere.”

The Nevada State Fair, which began in 1874, was Nevada’s longest running event until it shut down in 2010 for lack of funding. Taylor, who managed the fair for three years in the early 2000s, hopes the sesquicentennial event will kick off an annual fair once again.

The fair, which begins at 5 p.m. today, includes a livestock show and auction, a ranch rodeo, carnival, vendors, food and entertainment. Admission is free, but entrance fees will be charged to the rodeo and carnival and other features.

Main parking for the fair will be at the Casino Fandango, with a JAC bus working as a shuttle. Taylor estimated patrons would need not wait long for a ride from the casino to Fuji Park.

“It’s only a mile away,” she said. “It should go pretty quickly.”

After working early this week, she said, necessary preparations have all been put in place.

“The tents are all up. The pens are all up. We’re all ready for the livestock to get here,” Taylor said. “The still exhibits have all been judged. The vendors are setting up. We’re ready to go.”

Taylor urged families to head to the fair over the next five days.

“It’s in a beautiful park,” she said. “There’s grass and trees. There’s shade everywhere.”
