Man faces prison in sex assault case

A Coleville man faces 8-20 years in Nevada State Prison after he admitted to a count of attempted sexual assault on a child under the age of 16.

Colton Thomas Ward, 23, will have to be certified by a psychologist that he won’t offend again to be eligible for the probation. He will be subject to lifetime supervision and must register as a sex offender.

He has been held in Douglas County Jail on $100,000 bail since he was arrested June 6. According to court documents, Ward was arrested on a warrant issued Oct. 8, 2013, in connection with a May 22, 2013, incident.

District Judge Tod Young set a Sept. 16 sentencing date to give the Nevada Department of Parole and Probation time to complete a psychosexual evaluation.

■ A Carson City woman must notify her employer that she admitted to burglarizing a room in a Gardnerville elder care facility.

Serena Ruth Garcia, 24, admitted one count of burglary in Douglas County District Court on Tuesday.

Garcia is accused of taking nearly $1,300 from a couple’s room, and raiding their pain pills, taking more than half of them during one incident.

Garcia told District Judge Tod Young that she was addicted to Xanax.

She faces 4-10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Under a plea agreement, the prosecution will seek no more than 30 months in prison. If she is ever convicted of a subsequent offense, she won’t be eligible for probation.

Garcia admitted she went into the room to steal. Young set an Aug. 26 sentencing date.

After learning Garcia was working in a Reno elder care facility, he ordered her to inform her employer that she’d pleaded guilty to the charge.

Garcia is seeking diversion on the charge, which would allow her to remove the felony if she completes drug court or a similar program.
