More than 160 Douglas County Republicans turned out on Tuesday for a candidates forum featuring the top candidates running for Nevada lieutenant governor.
The Douglas County Republican Central Committee hosted the forum for 2014 primary election candidates at the CVIC Hall in Minden.
Nevada Sen. Mark Hutchison and former Nevada Sen. Sue Lowden faced each other in the race for nomination as the Republican lieutenant governor candidate. District 39 Assemblyman Jim Wheeler met his challenger Robin Reedy. In the evening’s non-partisan race, Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini shared the stage with challengers Dave Brady and Michael Gyll. This was the last public event between the lieutenant governor candidates before voting begins.
Guests were invited to express their preference for their favorite Republican to land the party nomination for president in 2016. Each guest was encouraged to circle their top three choices resulting in 339 votes cast overall. Ben Carson captured 14.45 percent of the votes with Scott Walker taking 12.98 percent. Ted Cruz won 9.73 percent, Rand Paul 9.14 percent, Mike Huckabee 4.13 percent and Marco Rubio 3.83 percent. Central Committee Chairman Marco Caldana thanked the event team for their hard work, the media for the coverage and the candidates.
“Part of our mission is to help the voters make informed decisions and turn them out to the polls,” Caldana said. “The 160-plus folks in attendance showed our neighbors are engaged in their state, county and community.”
