May volunteers of the month

Each month, The Record-Courier profiles a volunteer in cooperation with Active Volunteers in Douglas, a nonprofit organization formed to address recruitment, retention, placement and recognition of volunteers.

Anyone who wishes to nominate a volunteer, or become active with AVID, is asked to call 783-6450 and leave a message, including a contact telephone number, or write AVID, P.O. Box 1057, Minden, 89423.

How long have you lived here in Douglas County?

We purchased our house in 2006 and have lived here full time for the last two years.

We have two sons and four grandchildren.

Are you currently working or retired?


If retired, former profession / If still working, current profession?

We were both analysts for the US Dept. of Treasury.

How long have you been a volunteer?

We have been volunteering at the Food Closet for about 1 year.

Where do you currently volunteer?

Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

What are your duties?

We distribute food to those in need every Friday. In addition we also pre-pack and distribute food at the Food Closet’s bi-monthly TEFAP events.

How much time do you volunteer per month?

About 16-20 hours each month.

Why and how did you become a volunteer?

We wanted to be of help to people in our community. The Food Closet was a good fit for both of us to be able to help those in need.

Favorite aspects of volunteering?

Helping others.

What would you say to others to encourage others to volunteer?

Volunteering is a great way to strengthen our community and to give back. In less than 4 hours on a typical Friday afternoon we have helped provide food to more than 30 families in Douglas County. The food closet makes volunteering easy and you can participate according to your own schedule. Come try it out. See what a great impact you can make in just a few hours.
