Chimney Beach among Forest Service areas opening soon

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is opening some recreation facilities early this season.

Inspiration Point, Logan Shoals, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor open April 21, while Sawmill Pond and Sandpit OHV areas open May 1, officials announced this week. Baldwin Beach and Nevada Beach and Campground open May 9.

Kaspian, Meeks Bay, Bayview and Fallen Leaf campgrounds open May 16. Taylor Creek Visitor Center, Tallac Historic Site and Kiva picnic area open May 24. Luther Pass Campground opens May 25 and Blackwood Canyon and Watson Lake open June 1.

Forest roads generally open between mid-May and June 1. For opening dates, consult the map at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/ltbmu/TravelManagement.

William Kent Campground on the West Shore will remain closed for construction during the 2014 season, officials said. Beach and day use sites will be closed for part of the season.

Work in the campground includes installation of best management practices to reduce the amount of storm water runoff and sediment reaching Lake Tahoe. Work is expected to be finished in 2014; work on beach and day use areas might extend into 2015 depending on weather and water levels.
