Ranchos barely makes list for top home ownership

An organization that claimed the Gardnerville Ranchos was the best place for young families to live has a new top 20 list, which puts the Carson Valley bedroom community at the bottom.

Nerdwallet.com listed the top 20 best places with populations over 5,000 for home ownership in Nevada.

Topping the list was Silver Springs east of Carson City, where the home ownership rate was 80.5 percent. That may be due to the median home value of $114,300, the lowest on the list. Silver Springs residents also pay a higher portion of their household income than any other place on the list, 42.3 percent.

Nerdwallet reports Silver Springs had an 18.8 percent population increase between 2010 and 2012.

No Douglas County community made the top 10 of best places to own a home, but Indian Hills made No. 11, with a homeownership rate of 67.5 percent, and a median home value of $231,000 and a growth rate of 6.5 percent.

No. 12 Johnson Lane’s home ownership rate was 89 percent, the highest for any of the 20 communities, but it also had the lowest growth rate, with minus 2.3 percent. Johnson Lane also had the highest median home price on the list with $371,500.

The Gardnerville Ranchos also had a negative growth rate with minus .06 percent. Douglas County’s largest single community had a home ownership rate of 69.8 percent with a median home price of $237,300.
