Rain but no snow in Valley forecast

Whatever snow is left in the Valley from the Jan. 30 snow storm should quickly melt off under the pressure of rain and warmer temperatures this weekend.

A wind advisory is in effect through 4 p.m. today for the Western Nevada valleys, including Carson Valley. Southwest winds 20-30 mph gusting to 55 mph are forecast for the Valley. Sierra ridge gusts could hit up to 100 mph.

Overnight southwest winds hit a top speed of 44 mph, with sustained winds of faster than 20 mph through much of the night along Highway 395 at Genoa Lane.

On Friday morning, a 61 mph wind gust was recorded in Carson Valley near Sheridan Acres.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reported 3 inches of snow overnight with more falling. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain fell in Western Carson Valley overnight.

Chains or four-wheel drive are required this morning over the Sierra on highways 50 and 88. High profile vehicles are prohibited on Highway 395 and through Washoe Valley.

An avalanche warning was issued for the Sierra Nevada from Ebbetts Pass north to Yuba Pass. The warning only affects backcountry skiers, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

A winter storm warning for heavy and blowing snow remains in effect until noon today for Stateline. An additional 6-12 inches is forecast to fall above 8,000 feet, with little or no accumulation at lake level.

Snow levels are expected to rise to 8,000 feet this afternoon, before they drop below 7,000 feet late Sunday.

Motorists should expect snowy conditions over Mount Rose and Carson Pass, while snow changes to rain on Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

In the Valley, rain is likely after 10 a.m. under cloudy skies with a high near 52 degrees. Southwest winds of 30 mph, gusting to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
