Carson Valley Sertoma Club member Norm Svensrud likes to say the club’s motto is, “earn money, give it away, and have fun doing it.”
The club’s annual chili and craft fair April 27 and 28 is one of the ways they live up to that motto.
“We’re experimenting every year trying to make it friendly to all ages,” Svensrud said. “We’ll continue to do that every year so patrons have plenty to do, and have a good time.”
The craft fair runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the Carson Valley Inn parking lot. A free shuttle runs continuously from anywhere in the parking lot to the main event.
Svensrud said they have close to 70 vendors signed up to sell their goods.
“We’re getting calls everyday from people wanting to sign up. And it’s a good variety of crafters,” he added. “Everything from jewelry, to clothing and different arts and crafts.”
There will also be plenty of Sertoma chili for sale.
“We’ve been making the same chili for years and everyone seems to love it,” Svensrud said. “We have chili dogs, bowls of chili, as well as hotdogs and hamburgers.”
Guests can try their luck winning the Barrel of Booze by purchasing raffle tickets six for $5.
“It will be full of wine and other kinds of liquor,” Svensrud said. “Having won it myself one year, it certainly gives you a lot, and you win the wheelbarrow, too.”
Carl and the Classics is providing the music while people browse the craft booths, and the Sertomas have replaced the competitions from previous years with more kid-friendly games.
“We’re very appreciative of CVI letting us use their facility to raise money,” Svensrud said. “Everything we earn, we give away to worthy causes in the Valley.”
Carson Valley Sertoma supports the senior soup program, China Spring, Boys & Girls Club, Food Closet, high school scholarships, the hearing impaired and others.
The club meets 7 a.m. Fridays at Sharkey’s Casino.
