Carson Valley Sinfonia performs spring concert

The Carson Valley Sinfonia will present its 2014 spring concert on 4 p.m. Sunday in Minden’s historic CVIC Hall.

The performance is open to the public without charge. Featured on the program will be two new works by Carson Valley composer and cellist Marcia Stockton, “Aughrim’s March” and “Prelude and Fugue,” a new string orchestra arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s, “Pas de Deux” from his “Nutcracker Ballet.” Conductor John O’Neill’s “High Jinks for Tuba and Strings” with tuba soloist, Jay Bigelow. Also programmed for the afternoon’s performance are “The Sound of Music,” “Over the Rainbow,” a movement from Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5,” O’Neill’s, “Carson Valley Rhapsody” and the finale from Dvorak’s ”Symphony No. 8”.

The Sinfonia, a student/community string orchestra is open to qualified musicians from the greater Carson Valley area, drawing participants from as far away as South Lake Tahoe, Sparks and Yerington. Members range in age from 11 to 90, and in experience, from the intermediate student and talented amateur, to the professional. The orchestra is an offshoot of the Carson Valley Violin School, founded in 1992 by John and Nelle O’Neill with the assistance of the Carol Franc Buck Foundation, Douglas County School District and Douglas County Recreation Department. Since its inception in 1995, the Sinfonia has premiered more than 30 new compositions and arrangements by several local composers many of which were subsequently accepted for publication and since performed by hundreds of orchestras throughout the United States and Canada. Nine of these scores received an editor’s choice award given annually for outstanding new publications, by J. W. Pepper, the worlds largest distributor of sheet music.
