'Call Me Madam' opens to sell-out crowd

There wasn’t a sour note in the house for opening weekend of “Call Me Madam.”

The second weekend of Carson Valley Community Theatre’s musical comedy is Friday through Sunday in the CVIC Hall.

Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m.

“We had a sell-out crowd on Sunday. It was superb. It was better than my expectations,” director Norris Edson said. “The cast is having so much fun. They get a charge out of entertaining the audience.”

The “Call Me Madam” story is a satire on politics and foreign affairs that spoofs America’s penchant for lending billions of dollars to needy countries. The show centers on Sally Adams, a well-meaning but ill-informed socialite widow who is appointed U.S. ambassador to a small fictional European country, the tiny duchy of Lichtenburg. It’s not long before her down-to-earth, typically undiplomatic manner has surprised and charmed the local gentry, especially the handsome prime minister. A second romance is blossoming between her young aide and Lichtenburg’s enchanting young princess.

Adams is played by theater veteran Carla Wilson. The demanding role requires eight wardrobe changes.

“It’s a really heavy role, but she’s doing great,” Edson said. “She’s done a lot of theater and it shows in her performance.”

Edson expects another sell-out for Sunday’s matinee, so he suggests purchasing tickets in advance.

“We thank the community for their support. It’s important,” he added. “We’ve had people comment on how far we’ve come in 10 years as a theater company.”

Tickets can be purchased online at or 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the CVCT box office located at 1572 Highway 395, or at the door. Adult admission is $18 and admission for seniors and students is $16. Groups of 10 or more can be purchased at a discount price of $2 off regular price at the box office.

Dinner and show tickets are available at Minden Food Co. for the Friday and Saturday performances for $52, and a Sunday champagne brunch before the matinee is available at Minden Meat and Deli for $40.
