Markleeville studio tour Saturday
September 26, 2013
The Markleeville Artists Autumn Open Studio Tour on Oct. 5-6 is in its 11th year and still going strong. It’s becoming a tradition as timeless as the changing Sierra season.
This year’s studio tour is dedicated to one of the original open studio artists, Peter Campbell Chope. There will be a toast to him at 5 p.m. Saturday on the back deck of his studio at 279 Montgomery St.
“This small Sierra community of artists has been opening their studios to more than 400 annual visitors for a decade,” organizers said. “And all this is accomplished on a grass roots level — just creative people finding a way to create a special and unique event.”
Markleeville Artists Open Studios is solely funded by member artists, local sponsors, and open studio guests.
“Come join us and spend the day visiting the studios of village artists creating oil paintings, watercolors pottery, photography, and stained glass,” organizers said. “Charles Muench will be selling his first book, ‘Markleeville Memories- Paintings of a Sierra Town’ at the Raymond View Road studio,as well as displaying new original oils. The talents of this Sierra community combined with the beauty of nature is a fine collaboration.”
The tour of the artists’ studios is free. Maps with directions to the Markleeville-vicinity homes and studios will be available during the weekend at the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce. The guide includes the artists descriptions and locations, as well as information about sponsors. Bright yellow and gold banners will be hanging throughout town, marking each artist’s studio.
