Grillers needed for Family Support Council
May 16, 2014
With seven return grillers and eight new ones, The Family Support Council is looking for five more contestants for its Grillin’ & Chillin’ Barbecue & Blues Cookoff.
The event is 5 p.m. June 7 in Heritage Park. Tickets are $25, and available at Family Support Council’s office, 1255 Waterloo Lane.
“The grillers are teasing each other and saying their recipe is the best kept secret in the Valley. They’re already starting to trash talk,” co-chairwoman Nancy Epstein said. “Some grillers are doing a repeat of what they had last year, and some are doing a new entry.”
Todd Wilcks won first place and people’s choice last year with his pulled pork tacos. He is returning to defend his title this year.
“Last year, 400 people attended. Everybody had a really great time and were happy to support Family Support Council,” Epstein said. “They wanted to see more product, so this year we wanted to expand to 20 grillers.”
The price of the ticket includes 10 tastings and one voting buck. Drinks will be sold separartely.
“You’ll get 10 ounces of barbecue and Family Support Council will have a booth for corn on the cob, green salad and a roll,” Epstein said.
Entertainment will be provided by Reno-based blues band Buddy Emmer, as well as a children’s area with a bounce house.
“They’ve played center stage for the Reno rib cookoff and with Willie Nelson,” Epstein said of the band. “We’re really looking forward to the barbecue and blues. People really enjoy getting to come out to a family-friendly event.”
Judges for the cookoff are Sheriff Ron Pierini, Bill Chernock and Drew Aguilar.
Tickets sold out last year, so Epstein encourages people to buy tickets early.
