Not only did all 17 Douglas High School thespians qualify for state at the regional Thespian Festival in Reno on Feb. 7-8, but one of them earned the highest score out of all the competitors there.
Dalton Miller, 16, earned the top superior award with his solo musical piece, "It Takes Two," from Hairspray.
"I had no idea because there was so much talent there," he said. "It was unbelievable."
Dalton said performing a solo musical is more than just singing.
"You put movements with the song, and you actually feel the song," the sophomore said. "You sing it well and show the judges what you're made of."
Dalton also earned a superior ranking in contrasting dialogue along with Kai Stoll, and Katelin Teigan.
"I enjoy it because it lets everything out. When you act and get into character, it's a passion, and I love doing it," Dalton said of acting. "If I could act every day of this year, I would. I'm definitely going to do it when I'm a junior and senior."
The state competition is March 19-23 in Las Vegas.
To raise money to get to the competition, students are selling advertisements for the spring play "Almost Maine" the last weekend in March and first weekend in April. Businesses can contact troupe director Amy Sando at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the school directly to place an ad. They will also be having a raffle at the show and need donations.
