Being a lifelong Lego builder herself, Minden resident Cristina Sheikman passed her passion down to her sons.
Peter, 7, and Grady, 5, entered their Lego creations in the Douglas County Public Library’s Lego building challenge.
The deadline for submissions is Wednesday.
“They both love building with Legos. This seemed like a perfect outlet for them to make something creative for others to see, too,” Sheikman said. “My husband and I saved our Lego sets from when we were kids. As a child I could build just about anything with Legos. I loved being able to give that to my kids.”
Peter and Grady both decided to build spaceships for their entries.
“I gave them the rules and they built everything themselves,” Sheikman said. “The boys are really excited about it. They rebuilt them three or four times before we turned them in because they kept playing with them.”
Peter said he got his idea from a Lego movie.
“I saw a Lego movie that had a spaceship I liked and decided to make a Rover with it,” he said. “I think it looks pretty good. It was sort of hard and sort of easy.”
Lego prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winner in each age category, with older winners receiving master builder Lego sets.
As of Tuesday, the library had received about 30 entries from children ages 2 to 14.
“We have a great selection. We’re still expecting a lot more. Usually kids turn them in the last few days,” librarian Maria Pearson said. “We’re always impressed by how talented the children are, and are looking forward to seeing what comes in next.”
Children and adults may participate; one entry per person. Children under age four must use Duplo bricks.
Winners of the contest will be announced on Jan. 15.
The Lego building challenge is sponsored by the Friends of Douglas County Library. Both branches of the library are participating in the challenge.
Winning entries will be displayed at the Minden branch of the library through Jan. 31.
Complete rules and entry form are available at the Minden and Zephyr Cove libraries and online at douglas.lib.nv.us.
