Douglas County Parks & Recreation September classes

Beginning Irish Dance

Ages 5-17 can learn the basic techniques and steps of traditional Irish dance and have the opportunity to participate in the local events. Class held 6:15-7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 3-24 at the Dance Workshop. Cost is $55.

Pottery — Mosaic Face Mobile

Ages 7-17 will get their hands dirty while using slab clay to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic face mobile. Class held 4-6 p.m. Sept. 10, and 4-5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Sapphire Wizard. Cost is $35.


This class for ages 8-13 will teach students safe archery practice with certified instructors. All equipment will be provided. Class will be3:30-4:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 9-30 at Minden Elementary School and Tuesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 1 at Piñon Hills Elementary School. Cost is $40.

Beginner’s Tai Chi

Learn this soft martial arts form that will include warm ups, exercises and repetitions. Class will be Saturdays and is on going. Cost is $5 per month.

Ballroom Dancing

This is a chance to learn and practice the fundamental of many popular dances. Class will be 7:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays, Sept. 6-27. Cost is $80 per couple or $45 for single.


Relax your mind and body; students will leave class like they never have felt before. Class will be 10-11 a.m. Fridays, Sept. 13-27 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $5 per month.

Dog Obedience

Learn to establish good conduct and curb bad habits and help you teach basic commands. Class held 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 25-Oct. 30 at the Carson Valley Middle School and the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building. Cost is $80.

All Day Scrapbooking Workshop

Enjoy a day to work on your scrapbooking projects. Instructor Jackie Gordon will share ideas, and have tools available for use. Class will be 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sept. 15 at the senior center. Cost is $25, which includes a snack and water.

Wildlife Photography

Class will focus on ethics, equipment, focusing, lighting, how to hold the camera, proper clothing, and where to look locally for interesting wildlife. Class will be 6-9 p.m. Sept. 18 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $15.

Digital Photography

Want to learn more than the point and shoot setting on your camera. Class will include understanding shutter speeds, aperture openings, ISO settings, and how they all work together. Class will be 6-9 p.m. Sept. 25 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $15.

Astronomy Today

This class is an introduction to astronomy with an emphasis on the historical development and stars and galaxies. Every class will conclude with an observing session with the final class being located at a dark site viewing. Class held 7-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 5-Oct. 17 at the recreation annex building, and 6-10 p.m. Oct. 26. Cost is $30.

Concealed Weapon Certification

This course will cover the requirements for Nevada State CCW and can be taken by CCW applicants or anyone wanting to learn to shoot handguns. Class will be 6-9:30 p.m. Sept. 11 and 13 at the Recreation Annex building, and 8-11 a.m. Sept. 14 at Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus an additional $10 insurance fee payable to the instructor. Spouses are ½ price.
